ANITA BISCKEI

PUBLISHER: ANITA BISCKEI

Anita is passionate about connecting people with each other and bringing people together.

In her free time she loves traveling with her family within the U.S. and in Europe. She also loves going on walks, cooking, doing crossword puzzles and is currently learning embroidery.

Anita grew up in Hungary, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area at the age of 27. She’d earned her college degree in Europe (to be an employment specialist) but her love for being around children and the fact that she spoke English, allowed her to easily find babysitting jobs in the U.S.

The mother in one of the families for whom she worked was a wedding photographer. Anita loved watching her employer editing photos, and she became interested in learning more about photography. Anita eventually became her assistant and realized that photography was what she really wanted to do.

She spent a year learning everything she could by assisting, and saving money to buy her first camera. Soon she was booking her own weddings. She eventually branched out into event/school and portrait photography until the pandemic, when she became unemployed.

Anita likes to say that becoming a magazine publisher was a happy accident. She’d been a feature family photographer for Orinda Living, a local magazine owned by Best Version Media. During the pandemic Anita and her own family decided to move to Ashland. Anita shared that plan with her publisher, who then asked if Anita would be interested in starting a community magazine herself. “At first I told her no way!” Anita says. “I didn’t know anyone here, I had never worked in magazine publishing, and I wasn’t even American! I was full of fear but when I realized that I didn’t have to give up my photography passion in order to be a publisher, I said yes!”

That very year Anita, her husband Rob, their now 15 year-old daughter Samantha, and their Tibetan Terrier, Spirit, moved. Once they were settled in Ashland, Anita put her plan into action.

“Soon after I finished my publishing training, I posted a message on Nextdoor that I was looking for a writer for Ashland Living,” Anita says. “Kristin was among the many writers who applied. Kristin is an excellent writer. I was so proud of her when her article on Daniel Sperry (May issue 2024) was recognized as the Grand Prize Winner in BVM’s content contest, standing out in a field of 500 writers! And when Wendy became our magazine designer I had a feeling that we would be a dream team!! I love working with both of them!

When we first started it took me three and a half months to have enough advertisers to go to print. In January 2022 the inaugural issue of Ashland Living came out.”

It had been her whole family’s dream to live in a town where music, art, and theatre are such a huge part of life. For Anita, getting to know the area and its people, and having a voice in the community to help business owners grow their trade, has only enhanced that dream.

WENDY SMITH

DESIGNER: WENDY SMITH

Wendy’s career has been in the publishing and nonprofit industries as a graphic designer - designing print and digital media. She was assigned to Ashland Living by Best Version Media.

Originally from the Chicago area, she and her family moved to the Denver, Colorado area in 2014. With their two sons now in college, she and her husband are beginning a new phase as empty nesters, and are looking forward to getting away together. Wendy enjoys reading books, playing piano, and doing creative projects.

Her task on the Ashland Living team is to design the magazine every month, arranging all the elements of copy and photos together into a visually pleasing piece - similar to finishing a jigsaw puzzle.

Working out of her home office in Colorado (supervised by her ten-year old spaniel/terrier mix co-worker), the team hadn’t met in person until this past April when Wendy was able to visit Ashland. The three had a great time.

“Anita and Kristin kindly gave me a tour of downtown Ashland. I got to visit local businesses and meet some of our advertisers,” she says. “We visited the beautiful Lithia Park, and Lake of the Woods. We also attended a Macbeth performance at OSF. I still think about the delicious London Fog tea I had at Noble Coffee Roasting. It was a very special and memorable visit. Ashland is a beautiful place and I cannot wait to come back to visit.”

Wendy expresses appreciation for the Ashland Living community of neighbors. “Thank you so much for reading our well-curated content and supporting our local advertisers! It truly is enjoyable to bring people together through Ashland Living. And working with Anita and Kristin is the (cherries) on top.”
